Remote controlled cars are often built from a box, purchased as a complete set. However, there are some hobbyists who prefer to build their own RC from scratch, or at least turn a car model into one.
One such hobbyist is YouTube Make It RC and for his latest upload, he converted a 1983 Chevy Camaro Z28 promo model car into a fully functional 1/25 RC.
Starting as a promo car, the Camaro scale model here begins as lifeless plastic with wheels. The paint is monotonous and the finish is definitely devoid of important details. Not to mention, the chassis isn’t a radio-controlled toy at all.
So what does he do? First, he had to remake the chassis. He used the 1/25 FF4 chassis kit, which perfectly matched the promo car. The build-yourself kit comes with a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout. He also chose a five-spoke wheel as the base.
Using the N20’s motor and drivetrain, the YouTuber completed the chassis kit, getting it ready for the electronics and battery to be added. The ESC, battery, and receiver were assembled in the body, with the Camaro’s toy interior ripped out. For the receiver, he chose to use Radiolink R4FGM, while zip ties were used to secure the cables. The battery is fastened using velcro.
To make sure the body was ready for assembly, the YouTuber had to disassemble the promo car and remove the lights, interior and windshield. He then detailed every part including the whole body using an airbrush and a Sharpie. He even printed the side mirrors to make them more realistic.
The result is what you can see above – a third-generation Camaro RC model with exterior details. The windshield was blacked out to hide the missing interior, but overall, the job is impressive and well worth a second look.
