2024 Toyota Tacoma Has Turbo, Four-Cylinder Hybrid Power: Report

Posted on

The next generation Toyota Tacoma is currently in development. The heavily camouflaged test vehicle seen over the last year has left much to the imagination, and we know very little about it. We know even less about what will set it in motion, but a new video from The Fast Lane Truck’s YouTube channel highlights some new and exciting rumours.

An “insider source” has told the publication that the next-gen Tacoma will arrive with two engine options under the hood. The mid-size pickup isn’t fully electric yet, but we suspect there will be a hybrid variant that pairs a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor in the pickup.

This arrangement is already driving other Toyota products. A similar configuration exists in the Lexus RX, which produces a total of 366 horsepower (272 kilowatts) and 406 pound-feet (550 Newton-meters) of torque. It’s also on the new Crown, producing the same 340 hp (253 kW) and 400 lb-ft (542 Nm) of torque.

Another engine option is a non-hybrid 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Toyota already uses it in the 2023 Highlander. It makes 265 hp (198 kW) and 309 lb-ft (419 Nm) of torque in the SUV. The Tacoma’s powertrain can have different outputs as Toyota adapts the engine to its specific pickup trucks and needs.

Toyota has done a great job keeping the next-generation Tacoma a secret. We haven’t elaborated on the design yet, although it should borrow heavily on styling cues from Toyota’s recently redesigned larger Tundra. The two trucks will share the platform, Toyota’s TNGA-F architecture. The Tacoma’s interior should receive a thorough modernization with the next-generation model, giving the vehicle the latest amenities.

The TRD Pro may not be the top trim of the truck when the Tacoma goes on sale. The video also talks about the new trim coming to the Tacoma and another model in the Toyota range – the Trailhunter. This will supposedly give the pickup unique upgrades that make it more suitable for off-roading and rock climbing.
