The highway code is clear, there are things that no motorist should ever allow themselves to do in order not to put themselves and others at risk.
Anyone who behaves in an inappropriate manner and therefore does not comply with the rules of the Highway Code, accepts the risk of get hefty fines and serious consequences.
Checkpoints are checkpoints that in theory should make us feel safe but as far as possible being in good standing scares all motorists.
They are carried out by traffic agents who check the territory randomly to make sure that everyone respects the rules and that no one comments on violations of any kind.
Highway Code here are the rules that all motorists are called to respect
If the vehicle or the driver show inappropriate signals, the officers stop the car and carry out a general check.
First they show the paddle and then they order you to pull over by taking a look at the outside of the vehicle and at the driver. This understand if it circulates in compliance with the highway code and therefore if the vehicle is intact, if the seat belts are fastened, if the lights are on, especially in poor visibility conditions or in the evening.
Immediately afterwards they ask for the documents, therefore the driving licence, the insurance sticker, then the registration certificate of the vehicle, revision. If only one defect is found in the vehicle for example hanging bumper, broken headlights, broken glass or with small cracks, the officers sign a fine.
Windshield with a crack, that’s what happens
Be careful because if the windshield has even a very small crack, the police force will apply a very steep fine which is unavoidable. According to article 79 paragraph 1 of the highway code, the broken windshield or other broken elements of the car they do not characterize a vehicle in roadworthy condition.
So the agents have the right, indeed the duty, to sign a €71 fine. On the other hand, the violation found on the motorway is followed by a higher fine of €106 with the deduction of 2 points from the driving licence.
Consequently if you realize you have even just a small crack on the windshield it is better not to drive because the damage can get worse and a high fine can also be added to this.
The minimum damage can be repaired with a negligible expense, the fine is far less convenient also associated with the loss of points from the driving license that have the Highway Code
