The latest teaser for the Mazda CX-90 reveals that it’s getting a plug-in hybrid powertrain that the company is calling the E Skyactiv PHEV. This is the brand’s first electric vehicle available nationwide. The image also shows off the tail of the upcoming crossover. This model’s full debut will be in January 2023.

A person holding the charging cable is out of focus but is visible on the right side of the image. It shows the plug for the PHEV system is on the passenger side of the CX-90.

The teaser shows the rear passenger side of the CX-90. We can see the lower border of the rounded rear window. The taillights have a box-shaped section on the outer edge with a luminous strip leading towards the center of the vehicle.

An earlier CX-90 teaser (above) showed the inline-six badge on the vehicle. What’s not clear is whether this is also a PHEV powertrain. Mazda’s announcement says “the first 2024 CX-90 will be available nationwide as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.” However, it does not specify the model will only comes as PHEV.

Mazda could also fit a 2.5-liter four-cylinder plug-in hybrid from the CX-60 to the CX-90. It has a total system output of 323 horsepower (241 kilowatts) and 369 pound-feet (500 Newton-meters) of torque. This setup allows the crossover to reach 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph (200 kph). A 17.8 kilowatt-hour battery provides a range of 39 miles (63 kilometers) in WLTP combined cycle.

The CX-60 was also available with a 3.3-liter inline six with a 48-volt mild hybrid system in some markets. It produced 280 hp (209 kW) and 331 lb-ft (450 Nm) for Australia. The output may differ in other applications.

Mazda allegedly intends to introduce the Mazda6 generation with a rear-wheel drive inline six engine. However, this model has not yet arrived. Instead, the automaker has apparently decided to focus on crossovers first, including the CX-50 through the CX-90.
