Mazda CX-90 Teaser Video Reveals Face, Highlights Performance

Posted on

The next video in the Mazda CX-90 “unboxing” teaser campaign is here. This time, the discussion focuses on performance but in the process, we see a lot of the exterior of this SUV. That includes a full, unobstructed view of the CX-90’s face.

If performance feels like a topic Mazda has covered in this teaser train, you’re not entirely wrong. The SUV’s 3.3-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine was previewed in its first video on Jan. 17, revealing 340 horsepower (254 kilowatts) and 369 pound-feet (500 Newton-meters) of torque. To be specific, Mazda says its engine was developed “up to” that amount, suggesting there may be lower-spec trims with less horsepower. Don’t forget, the CX-60 with a 280 hp engine version has already made its debut for markets outside of North America.

While the engine is prominently mentioned, the teaser also makes reference to the basics of the CX-90 and its classic front-engine, rear-drive architecture. This is expected to give a sporty impression to this large SUV, assisted by Mazda’s Kinetic Posture Control (KPC) system borrowed from the MX-5 Miata. As a refresher, this is an electronic control system that can apply a special braking force to the wheels when cornering, thereby enhancing handling. Ansted ants from Wheel Dealer fame comes out in this video, demonstrating the CX-90’s handling while raving about its capabilities.

The teaser also states the CX-90 is designed around a turbocharged I6. This is interesting because it shows a hybrid model can pair that engine with electric power, as opposed to using the 2.5-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder hybrid powertrain found in the CX-60. Maybe this will be discussed in a future teaser.

Mazda CX-90 Interior Teaser

Amidst all the discussion about the show, there are two famous visual teasers. We got a partial look at the CX-90’s interior, though it’s shadowed and still under construction. Outside, there are a few moments in the video where we get a glimpse of the front of the SUV. Stay at the end of the video and show it in full. Unsurprisingly, it looks a lot like the CX-60 with slightly different corner vents. Two cameras are visible at the bottom of the grille, showing the advanced driver assistance systems that can be offered.

Expect more CX-90 teasers ahead of the official reveal on January 31st.
