Harsh restrictions for the new green belt in Rome: Euro 2 petrol and Euro 3 diesel engines banned, that’s when it will come into force.

There council of Rome is ready to deliberate the arrival of the new one green band, which aims to ban older and more polluting cars from the city centre. The area in consideration covers about 204 square kilometers inside the Grande Raccordo Anulare and provides for a ban on petrol cars up to Euro 2 and diesel vehicles up to Euro 3.

However, the program includes a further tightening of these rulesespecially on days when high concentrations of polluting particles in the air are recorded, identified in the PM10 fine particles.

How the gates and bans of the new green belt in Rome will work

The first checks will be entrusted to local police and then we will proceed with the installation of the electronic gates. However, the regulation has already been defined: from Monday to Saturday, 24 hours a day, entry to cars with petrol engines up to class Euro 2while for diesel ones the limit rises to Euro 3 class.

Similar speech for i Euro 1 class mopeds and motorcyclesin the case of petrol, and class Euro 2 if diesel. Be careful though, because the goal is to extend the ban to Euro 3 petrol car as of November 1, 2024.

An important clarification concerns the ZTL permit. Although it has recently been renovated, it will not be sufficient to access the perimeter when the electronic gates are activated: an operation that is expected to be completed by February 2023.

What will happen then? The municipality of Rome will take care of contacting these approximately 35,000 users with the aim of offering them an annual subscription to public transport completely freeprovided that the old and polluting vehicle is scrapped with a ban on repurchasing it for the same period taken into consideration.

The green light is expected from the Lazio region, as well as obviously convincing these motorists that public transport in the capital is a sufficient guarantee to abandon their car.

Finally, as we said at the beginning, the goal is also to tighten these rules with seasonal directives and for certain time slots. The Green Band itself, in fact, will also provide for the ban to Euro 4 diesel-powered cars from November 1st to March 31st, from Monday to Saturday from 7.30 to 20.30.

From 7.30 to 10.30 and from 16.30 to 20.30 the ban will also affect commercial vehicles N1, N2 and N3 Euro 4 Diesel, as well as Euro 3 diesel mopeds and motorcycles. From 1 November 2024 the ban will involve even diesel-powered cars and commercial vans up to Euro 5.
