Porsche 718 Boxster EV Spied As Development Continues

Posted on

We’re about two years away from the launch of the first all-electric Porsche sports car. The 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman duo will switch to electric power for the next generation and Porsche is currently working on two two-door models. Seen in the gallery below is a prototype of the roadster model as development continues with tests on public roads in Germany.

This isn’t the first time our photographers in Europe have captured an electric Boxster in motion, although this new shot shows a different test vehicle compared to the ones we’ve previously observed. It has almost full body camouflage and it is difficult to judge the final design at this early stage. Don’t let the fake exhaust in the middle of the rear bumper fool you – this isn’t a combustion-powered prototype.

While we are aware of the fact that there is a battery and at least one electric motor in this vehicle, we do not know the exact specifications of the system. Porsche previewed the Boxster EV with the Mission R Concept and the concept has a dual-motor setup with a peak output of 1,073 horsepower (800 kilowatts). The production model definitely won’t have the same power level, but we’re sure there will be multiple power stages, as well as rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants. If this turns out to be true, the electric Boxster will be the first in model history to feature AWD capability.

The Boxster EV, along with the hardtop Cayman brothers, will share the same platform as the Porsche Macan EV. The Premium Platform Electric architecture will allow the automaker to install the battery pack as low as possible between the two axles, keeping the vehicle’s mid-engine configuration fairly close to its current form with the combustion Boxster.

The electric Boxster will go into production at some point in late 2024 or at least that’s how different reports go. We don’t expect to see the final production model debut until late 2023 or even the first half of 2024. Sales should start for the 2025 model year.
