Porsche has already prepared its third electric vehicle. The 718 Cayman and Boxster duo are about two years away from arriving, but new spy photos capture the convertible testing in Spain.
The automaker previewed the electric 718 last year with the Mission R Concept. Porsche packed the model with a dual-motor setup, giving it all-wheel drive and 1,073 horsepower (800 kilowatts). Don’t get yourself excited and expect that much power in the production version as it’s unclear how much horsepower and torque it will have. However, Porsche will likely offer the 718 in rear-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, a first for the model. This can be significant for its performance capabilities.

The electric 718 Boxster will retain its mid-engine proportions even with the new powertrain. Photos show the EV closely resembles the current car, but its deceptive camouflage hides the finer styling details. At the front, a faux intake appears to hide an active aerodynamic flap. Earlier spy shots showed the 718 with the blade closed behind the camouflage. However, the blade is exposed in the new photo, showing the radiator behind it.
Photos do not yet clearly capture the car’s interior. New exterior images provide a glimpse of the cabin, showing the automaker hiding the dashboard under a blanket. We wish Porsche filled the cabin with at least two screens and a few buttons.
Porsche covered up the 718’s signature side intakes, which were unnecessary with the electric powertrain. At the rear, fake exhaust outlets stick out against the busy rear bumper, and there’s plenty of camouflage surrounding the taillights. The new 718 duo will ride on a dedicated platform while the Premium Platform Electric architecture underpins the Macan EV. Porsche will install the battery low and between the axles in the 718, which will help with handling prowess.
Production of the electric 718 Cayman and Boxster is slated to begin in late 2024. Both EVs will go on sale for the 2025 model year, with a possible debut sometime in 2023. Porsche won’t be launching the electric 911 until the next decade.
