Production of the 2023 BMW XM Begins at the Spartanburg Manufacturing Plant

The 2023 BMW XM has officially started series production. The electrified high-performance crossover should reach dealers next spring, but XM assembly is underway right now in Spartansburg, South Carolina.

“We are very excited to add the first BMW XM to our factory portfolio,” said BMW Manufacturing President and CEO, Dr. Robert Engelhorn. “The modern, future-oriented design and powerful performance of the BMW XM have generated a lot of enthusiasm. As the center of competence for the X model, BMW Plant Spartanburg is ready to build this vehicle with the highest premium quality our customers deserve. “

XM debuted in September to little fanfare. It’s the first M-only vehicle since the iconic BMW M1, but with 644 horsepower and over-mass three tons, it is not the successor to the M1. It’s the heaviest production Bimmer ever offered, and it’s also the first to feature an electric powertrain from the BMW M. Then there’s the exterior design, which is as polarizing as it is unique. Whichever way you slice it, XM stands out.

In case you missed its debut, the 2023 XM combines a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine with an electric motor mounted to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine produces 483 hp alone, with the electric motor adding another 194 bangs. With everything synced we get a combined 644-hp rating and that’s enough to send the XM to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. If that’s not enough for you, BMW will be offering a Red Label edition with 738 hp but it will only arrive in the fall of 2023.

BMW’s Spartanburg facility is also home to production of the BMW X5, X6, and X7 SUVs. It is a very active location, recording a total of 257,876 exports from the mill in 2021 alone. BMW didn’t offer approximate production figures for the XM, but with a starting price of $159,995, it’s safe to assume that volumes will be lower.
