Pour one for the McLaren 720S. While we already had the idea that one of our favorite super sports cars would be discontinued after five years on the road, it’s officially official: the 720S is no more. It’s certainly said to see the 720S join the list of discontinued cars for 2023, but there’s good news and bad news regarding its yet-to-be-named successor.
The good news is that McLaren has confirmed it is working on the next iteration. Automotive News spoke to McLaren America President Nicolas Brown in Las Vegas, who provided a bit more insight into what the next 720S could potentially be while keeping the light on specifics.
“[Customers are] anticipate that it will be a refinement of the 720,” Brown told Automotive News. “They understand that this is not an all-new, next-generation ground-up vehicle. They have already started putting deposits with dealers, although we haven’t said anything yet.”
The bad news for potential buyers, however, is that the unnamed replacement is reportedly selling out “through 2024,” Brown said in the same interview.
Beyond this bit of info, McLaren hasn’t released any details about the proposed 720S successor. The company recently confirmed a partnership with Lockheed Martin on a “futuristic” supercar design, but it’s unclear whether the collaboration has anything to do with the new 720S.
Otherwise, the automaker continues to roll its new Artura hybrid to dealers – mind you – while rumors swirl about an electric sedan and even an SUV. We’ve reached out to McLaren to see if there might be any more info regarding this story. Stay tuned for more.
